Decluttering: Shelves Storage

Decluttering: Shelves Storage

This is another Shelf Cabinet I was keen to declutter. This cabinet is one of the most cluttered spots in the house, where my shame starts. It was filled with numerous plastic trays, each of them containing items we don’t really use and don’t need. Whenever I get any thing I didn’t know where to keep, I used to put it there. Ended up it became an accumulation of unnecessary stuff, and I hardly could say what’s exactly inside that trays. I seldom get anything from there, so even before decluttering it was clear I can get along without most of those items.

Why I didn't declutter it earlier?

Previously I already tried to declutter this shelf, but every time most of the things were returned because “I might use it some day”. This is the thought that always catches me!

But now I’m going to approach this storage very decisively and make drastic changes. I even asked my husband to avail some of his time as some of the items might be his so I needed his decision.

Decluttering: Shelves Storage

First I removed all the stuff from the plastic tray and pile them right on the floor. There is a huge amount of small things! Now it’s time to decide which things will still be useful in the house and what has to be discarded.

Decluttering: Shelves Storage

How I decide what to remain and what to discard:

I check every single item. Usually I ask myself questions trying to understand if I shall keep or discard the thing:

  • Do I need it?

  • Do I intend to use in the nearest future?

  • Can I substitute it with something else I have?

  • Have I used it in the past months or ever? If not, what was the reason (for example, I forgot about it, I was not satisfied with the results of its use, it got broken/expired?)

  • Does the thing have any sentimental value for me or my husband?

What shall I do with those things?

Asking this questions helped to give a second life to some of the items I took out from the storage. If this is consumable item and still can be used, I make myself use it intentionally unless I really do not need it anymore. Mostly it’s about different beauty products, masks, cleansers.

Those items which we decide to discard, we will either pass for recycling or will throw if those are small things not needed anymore.

Continuing organizing shelves:

Once I segregated items which can be discarded, I started arranging remaining things by categories. Here on the photo you can see that there is much less stuff remained!

Decluttering: Shelves Storage

To say frankly, I enjoy and feel some relief when I manage to remain only the things I intend to use and release so much space. I already imagine in my mind a picture how my house could look like with no unnecessary stuff and no clutter! Step by step I’m trying to move towards that direction.

Once I reduced a number of stuff and remained only the things we will use, I return them back to the shelves. That’s incredible that now I even got unoccupied shelves and empty storage trays! For the moment I will keep those trays. While I’m still decluttering the house, I may need them to assign for storing some things temporary. Finally, hope I will be able to discard not only plastic storages, but even unnecessary shelves and avail more living space.

Home Organization: Clothing Folding (KonMari method)

Home Organization: Clothing Folding (KonMari method)

Among all the stuff in the house I have special relations with clothing:-) I really like clothing and like dealing with it! I like to dress up and have 3 different wardrobes for different purposes: for the office, for weekend and housewear. No wonder it takes space and challenges my creativity how to keep all that stuff.

This way of clothing folding I learnt from the book “Spark Joy” (by Marie Kondo). For me this method was very useful and helped to save more space inside drawers, so I want to share it here. This is particularly good for the clothing which doesn’t get wrinkled and doesn’t need ironing. If it does, I find it's still more convenient to store it on hangers.

Idea of this folding method is to fold clothing into small rectangle which can be stored in upright position. It will help to save the space and allow more convenient arrangement in the drawer. I will show how I folded a short-sleeve top and long sleeve blouse. T-shirts, dresses, skirts and pants can be folded exactly the same way, into rectangles.

  • Folding a Short-Sleeve Top

First I place a top to some surface and smooth it with the palm.

Home Organization: Clothing Folding (KonMari method)

Next, folding edges of the garment towards the centre, this is to achieve rectangle shape. Folding the right side first...

Home Organization: Clothing Folding (KonMari method)

...and do the same for the left side. Now it pretty looks like rectangle.

Home Organization: Clothing Folding (KonMari method)

Then I fold this rectangle lengthwise, it looks like a long narrow piece now.

Home Organization: Clothing Folding (KonMari method)

Fold this piece into half but leave a little gap at the edge (not fully reaching the edge).

Home Organization: Clothing Folding (KonMari method)

Folding it again into half or in thirds.

Home Organization: Clothing Folding (KonMari method)

After folding is done, I make a “stand upright” test. If I intent to keep clothing in upright position, it has to be able to stand without support. If folded garment is able to stand, it will stand in the drawer too without falling and creating mess.

Home Organization: Clothing Folding (KonMari method)

  • Folding Long-Sleeve Blouse

The same way I fold long-sleeve garment. I will picture it to show how I dealt with long sleeves.

We start with the same step, smoothing blouse on flat surface.

Home Organization: Clothing Folding (KonMari method)

First folding the edge from the right to the left (it's just how I did with my folding, it can start with another side too if convenient).

Home Organization: Clothing Folding (KonMari method)

Long sleeve goes beyond the garment edge, so I just fold it back to the right.

Home Organization: Clothing Folding (KonMari method)

Long sleeve is still beyond garment edge so I fold it one more time downwards.

Now do the same to the left side. Fold it towards the right.

Home Organization: Clothing Folding (KonMari method)

Fold the sleeve back to the left.

Home Organization: Clothing Folding (KonMari method)

Fold the pertruding portion of sleeve one more time, to the right. Now blouse is folded into a rectangle.

Home Organization: Clothing Folding (KonMari method)

Here I folded the rectangle lengthwise.

Home Organization: Clothing Folding (KonMari method)

     Folding again into half.

Home Organization: Clothing Folding (KonMari method)

     And folding into thirds.

Home Organization: Clothing Folding (KonMari method)

Now upright standing test. That’s it, folded tops are able to stand!

Home Organization: Clothing Folding (KonMari method)

Can all the clothing be folded in this way?

Here need to add that KonMari folding is suitable not for all types of clothing. If it’s made of a very thin delicate material, it will not keep the shape and will not be able to stand upright. I think it’s better to keep this type of garment on hangers.

If clothing is made of a thick material, it will be very bulky when folded and also will not be able to stand upright. It will be more convenient to keep that clothing flat.

When folding is done:

Home Organization: Clothing Folding (KonMari method)

I folded a few more garments and now put them into the drawer to see the effect. I’m really glad that this method of folding allows to see what’s inside the drawer from the first glance. I just find it’s more convenient than when I stored clothing flat and also it looks tidier.

Home Organization: Space Saving Folding

Home Organization: Space Saving Folding

Mundane things also can be incredible! This is exactly what I feel now. And reason is funnily mundane – I just learnt a space saving way to fold clothing! You know, I'm suffering from limited space in the house, so this finding makes me so happy:-)

Recently I have done a Bedding Closet organization. At that time I simply folded clothing flat and put one on the top of another in the drawer. You can see previous result on the right photo. This is what I see in the stores, and it looks quite neat there so for me it was a synonym of the top tidiness.

But today I happened to read a book Spark Joy and found a more convenient way of folding. I recommend this book to those who also feels need in decluttering and home organization. I’m just at the beginning of the book, but already managed to learn useful tips.

Home Organization: Space Saving Folding

Idea is clothing is folded into rectangles and stored in upright position. So I took out all the house clothing from the drawer, refolded them and returned back. This is the photo of result:

Home Organization: Space Saving Folding

I noticed two significant advantages of storing clothing in upright position:

  • Visual convenience

Once I open a drawer, I see from the first glance what’s inside. It makes it easier to select what I want to take, and easier to take it out. I do not have to dig inside, what I had to do when I stored clothing flat. And when I take one thing, others remain undisturbed and neat in their places.

  • Space saving

I noticed clothing takes less space when I store them upright. Previously there was no remaining space in the drawer, but now there was some. I even was able to add there a bathrobe previously kept in another drawer. I feel more comfortable to store same category items together, so I happily added a piece not fitted in earlier arrangement.

This is how drawer looks from outside (top drawer):

Home Organization: Space Saving Folding

I find it’s neater than it was from outside too.

I still have to practice my folding skills, overtime it will became more tidier and faster, but even now I can see result is better than original so I will stick to storing upright where possible.

If you have other tips how to fold and store clothing to share, please do so! It will be very interesting to try.

If someone is interested, I can post a pic how to fold clothing with this method, please let me know! (P.S. already posted, please check the post Home Organization: Clothing Folding (KonMari method))

Decluttering: Book Cabinet and Electronic Items

Decluttering: Book Cabinet and Electronic Items

Finally I reached it! At this stage of my house decluttering project I’m finally reaching areas I was scared even to think about. Those which are the most cluttered with different stuff, and I hardly can think how I can rearrange its content.

My intention for now is to discard really unnecessary items, avail more space and organize the one I decide to keep into different categories. One storage will be dedicated to one category only, otherwise it will confuse me and everything will get messed up again.

So here it is, rolling my sleeves to work it out.

So pity that I forgot to take photo of how it looked like before I started decluttering, I will try to do it next time. Anyway, it was really messy, different unrelated items were stored alongside each other.

First thing I’m looking at is what is necessary and what is not. Happened that lots of things from the shelves are not even needed at home. Most of the items there belong not to me but my husband, mostly electronic items. Very good that he is so supportive to my decluttering and kindly agree to discard some of the items since he does not need them.

Our decluttering works for today:

  • Discarding unused CD disks

They are not needed at home, but might be quite useful at work. Husband is going to bring them to the office for common use.

Decluttering: Book Cabinet and Electronic Items

  • Discarding Monoheadset

We do not use it but probably someone may do. Hubby will bring it to the office to share with colleague.

Decluttering: Book Cabinet and Electronic Items

  • Discarding USB charger

They are meant for iPod/iPhone/iPad. We used to have them a few years ago but now already using other brands of mobile devices for some time. This charger might have remained since then, so husband will share it at work with someone who can use it.

Decluttering: Book Cabinet and Electronic Items

  • Discarding Power Bank

I remember I won it in lucky draw at work. That’s really useful thing but it’s so big and heavy! Because of that I don’t find it convenient to carry in ladies handbag, it’s rather better to store at home or office in a drawer. But in this case I can use power socket instead of power back. Ended up this power bank was stored on the shelf more than a year, so I prefer to pass it to someone who may need.

Decluttering: Book Cabinet and Electronic Items

  • Discarding Empty boxes

Some of boxes are from our wedding rings, some from electronic items. Sometimes I keep boxes, especially if it’s from the costy products, probably hoping to keep it inside the box. But so far it never happen, in practice it’s not convenient every time pack the thing back after use, then unpack again. So I just throw the boxes and release the space they occupied.

And this is the final result! Actually I would say it’s temporary as I’m still not very satisfied, want to organize it a bit more. Lower shelf is occupied by unrelated to books items like software CDs and medical devices. At the moment I don’t have yet a dedicated place to store them so will leave here temporary. When I reach this category items and allocate them a particular place, will remove from the lower shelf and instead will put other books or paper items.

Decluttering: Fashion Accessories Storage

Decluttering: Fashion Accessories Storage

This is a plastic colorful storage I bought a few years ago. And after I revisited all its content recently, I found that it keeps a clutter of accessories I do not use and other things which even are not meant to be there. They all are stored neatly in this storage while I seldom open it (because most of the items inside there are unnecessary) and ends up most of the things there are being keep without need. Some of the things I even didn’t remember I had kept there!

For me tricky thing with excessive storage spaces (say storage spaces for unnecessary things) is that they do not disturb me, clutter is being hidden in drawers so I do not see it thus do not realize. So clutter is being encouraged to accumulate. That’s why for me decluttering is not only discarding unnecessary things but also reduction of unnecessary storage spaces.

There are a few accessories I found in the storage which I’m going to discard.

Decluttering  works for today:

  • Discarding unnecessary accessories

Most of the things in that batch are hair accessories which I do not like to use. I just find them not convenient to use, some pull hair too much, some look unsightly, for others I have better equivalent.

Decluttering: Fashion Accessories Storage

  • Discarding Plastic bracelet

After I have taken its photo for the blog post, I noticed it looks not bad on the camera. But in reality it became quite yellowish, looks worn out and doesn’t look really good. I don’t find it looks good so discard it.

Decluttering: Fashion Accessories Storage

  • Keeping Pearl bracelets

This is one of the cases when I actually decided to save items originally meant to declutter. I do not wear them because they are slightly big for my wrist, look too loose and size is not adjustable. But they are in good condition and I noticed they look interesting on photos. At least for now I save them purely for purposes of taking photos.

Decluttering: Fashion Accessories Storage

  • Discarding unnecessary earrings

Earrings are generally my favorite type of accessories. I used to have good collection of earrings bought in accessory stores until I found a jewelry good pair I like a lot and wear permanently. Probably I will pass these pairs on the photo to some of my colleagues.

Decluttering: Fashion Accessories Storage

  • Discarding a set of chockers

It was just a mistaken purchase, after I tried them at home I didn’t like how chokers looked on me. I will check with my colleagues if someone wants to get them.

Decluttering: Fashion Accessories Storage

  • Keeping Accessories storage

After I checked all the content of the storage, some things I discard or pass to somebody and some relocated to more appropriate places. Finally I managed to empty the storage fully. I had intention to discard it as well, but decided to keep for a while. My declutter works are still in progress, and I might need to assign it temporary for keeping other things. Hopefully by the time my decluttering is progressing for a while, I will get rid of unnecessary things and can discard some storages consuming space too.

Home Organization: Organizing Bedding Closet

Home Organization: Organizing Bedding Closet

Home Organization: Organizing Bedding Closet

Bedding closet that we have is very limited with space. This is just 3 drawers closet located inside the built-in wardrobe closet. Because of limited space I have to choose what things I really need to keep, otherwise will not be able to fit all.

All the things stored inside the closet are related to housewear and sleeping purposes. Each drawer I decided to assign storing things of only one purpose, different for each drawer. I think I just will be easier for me to remember where I keep what and easier to maintain it organized.

How I'm organizing:

Top drawer is assigned to storing clothing worn inside the house: sleepwear dresses, house dresses and housewear. Any time I need some house clothing, I will know where to find it.

Second drawer will be for keeping beddings, whether it’s bed sheets or pillow cases. I’m yet to decide whether all of them need to be kept.

You know, recently I was trying to declutter some of the beddings and realized I feel so sentimental about them.

Home Organization: Organizing Bedding Closet

Home Organization: Organizing Bedding Closet

Even though some I really do not need or some are so old and even torn in some places, don’t know why it still sticks to my heart. I just sort them out separately to see how is it going if they are not around.

In the bottom drawer I put all towels. Kitchen towels I grouped at one side and bathroom towels on the other. I also had to sort out all the towels and discard some old kitchen ones.

All that items consumed the entire closet space. Major things it hasn’t managed to fit are lingerie, hosiery and handkerchiefs. For them I purposely bought a box which I have placed on the top of the closet. I find it reasonable to keep this kind of things inside the wardrobe, anyway I do not have other choices so have to learn how to use limited unit space effectively.

At the moment I'm not quite sure, maybe this is not the perfect arrangement, but just the one I came up with by the moment. I will see whether I will be able to maintain it with minimum efforts (the main purpose of my entire decluttering and home organization works!) or need to work out some other solution.

Home Organization: Organizing Bedding Closet

Home Organization: Organizing Cupboard

Home Organization: Organizing Cupboard

In our house there are 3 main reasons why clutter occurs:

1. because we keep unnecessary things;
2. because we  keep unnecessary things;
3. because we keep unnecessary things.

To be serious, it also happens when some things do not have specifically assigned place. Or when I fail to return things I just used to assigned place.

Each of them (or mix of them) will usually end up with a pile of things on my desk, cupboard or wherever.

So far in my declutter works I’m trying to resolve keeping of the things I do not need, but actually keeping needed things in their proper dedicated places is not less important.

That’s why today I spend some time not discarding but organizing my bed&desk cupboard.

Cupboard is located just in between the working desk and bed. Just for convenience I’m trying to keep things near the places where they are most needed. If I’m working at the desk, I need relevant stationery nearby so I keep it in the cupboard. While I also have to keep in the same cupboard some things I usually use before going to bed (like my hand cream, face mist, tissue paper).

Since space is limited, I put in the cupboard only most needed things for both purposes. I used to keep more than that, as long as cupboard drawer can fit... until realized I don’t have to keep them all here. All other unrelated items are going to other places purposely assigned just to them, permanently or temporary at this moment.

So the top drawer is shared by stationary for working desk and most necessary beauty items for bed time, located at opposite sides of the drawer. So far I find it convenient, but maybe over time I will come up with better idea? Let’s try and see.

Home Organization: Organizing Cupboard

Home Organization: Organizing Cupboard

Bottom drawer of the cupboard is assigned to electronics related items: chargers, power bank, portable keyboard, USB desk lamp. Only those items which again I either need nearby during working at the desk or night time (like phone charger, for example).

On the top of the cupboard I will permanently keep only some artificial flowers and mobile devices. I use them so often that don’t want to keep enclosed anywhere.

Hope this arrangement of cupboard content will meet it’s purpose, I want to have most necessary things near the place they are needed. I will test it for a few days and see if it’s convenient enough or need to make any improvement.

Decluttering: Clothing and Home Accessories

Decluttering: Clothing and Home Accessories

Today I’m doing one of my most favorite types of decluttering: clothing.

I’m interested in fashion and I really like to deal with clothing. I find that clothing have so big impact to our personal image. Properly chosen clothing makes us look pretty, it allows to choose the style fitting our lifestyles the best and arguably has impact to quality of our lives.

This is the major reason why I have lots of clothing and my wardrobe can hardly fit it. But at the same time this is the problem. I have so cluttered wardrobe that hardly can fit anything new (oh, well, and still like to buy something new!).

So wardrobe closet is the place I have to keep under constant control and see whether I have there something unnecessary.

Today’s batch of clothes is not going to be the final. But at least I picked something which I do not wear because I realized it does not fit me well, or because it became worn out enough to discard it. I add some home accessories to this declutter batch and all together will donate to local organization helping people in need.

Here it is, my decluttering works for today:

  • Discarding clothing tops

Tops here are mainly my office wear, also have several t-shirts worn on weekends.

Office shirts are a bit worn out. At the collar area, near to the face that’s why might be noticeable. I just think it will not look tidy and professional at work so going to dispose it.

Decluttering: Clothing and Home Accessories

  • Discarding clothing bottoms

These are several skirts and weekend trousers. For one or another reason I wasn’t wearing these bottoms much, and just keeping them for moths and some even for years. So hopefully someone who needs it more will be able to use.

Decluttering: Clothing and Home Accessories

  • Discarding Feet Massage Mat

This is actually a good mat, I bought it either last year or before last year, but most of the time it spent folded with no use. Will donate it to save the space.

Decluttering: Clothing and Home Accessories

  • Discarding Home Accessory

This see star is with us for some time. I can’t even remember why we have it. Maybe someone gave it as a gift or we purchased at one of vacations. Anyway, it ended up just dust gathering dust on the shelf, so I decided to to discard it.

Decluttering: Clothing and Home Accessories

That’s it for now, I already have 2 bags of old clothing. Not bad space saving! And I still have to keep working on it.

Decluttering: Jewelry Packs and Miscellaneous

     Decluttering: Jewelry Packs and Miscellaneous

One more little decluttering session. I pick just a small amount of the things I keep unnecessarily and going to discard. I will try to move step by step, even if just small but regular steps, so my home decluttering project will be bringing some results. I see it requires discipline and consistency in work, will do my best to stick to it.

I noticed any time I manage to declutter something a little brings me... wonder how to describe this feeling... maybe feeling of relief. I see my place becomes tidier, it’s a good change inspiring to continue.

Today’s decluttering work:

  • Discarding Jewelry Packs

I noticed that the more expensive thing is, the more I care of the packs and boxes of it. I have purchased a pair of earrings a while ago and up to know didn’t dare to throw the packs. Sometimes I think I may use the box and keep the product inside as a way of better care. But in my experience I never do that. I have a dedicated place for keeping jewelry and accessories, so will through all the packs to save the space.

Decluttering: Jewelry Packs and Miscellaneous

  • Discarding Unnecessary Hair Curlers

These are heatless overnight hair curlers I bough a few years ago. But really I used them just several times. What I discovered that it’s very uncomfortable for me to sleep wearing curlers. I always feel them in the hair, sometimes they get loose and lost. And due to their small diameter, curlers create quite small sharp looking curls. It’s not my desired result, so just stop keeping them on the shelf and dispose.

Decluttering: Jewelry Packs and Miscellaneous

  • Discarding Unnecessary Plaster Packs

That seem small thing but when they are kept in large quantities, they also take some space I the storage box which I would like to use wiser. Keeping them for so long time with no use, that some already expired and some are going to expire. Discard since do not need them.

Decluttering: Jewelry Packs and Miscellaneous

  • Discarding Box from Electronic Product

This is the box from travel adaptor. Cannot even recall why this box was kept, but just found it in the storage box. Maybe I forgot to throw it earlier? Never mind, I do it now.

Decluttering: Jewelry Packs and Miscellaneous

One more step for home decluttering is done, that’s great. Keep moving!

Decluttering: Skincare and Beauty Products

Decluttering: Skincare and Beauty Products

Why do I need to declutter skincare?

Time to declutter my skincare and beauty products. I have accumulated so many skincare what I don’t use that there is no space left for the one which I actually use. Not to say it makes my bathroom look messy and cluttered.

Most of the skincare I’m going to discard this time was not actually purchased. Skincare stores where I buy my creams and serums have good marketing strategy giving away some promotional trial kits for free when purchase reaches some certain sum.

It’s actually good for me, I was able to get lots of products I like for free, but there are some that either I do not like or they do not target my skin concerns.

I thought I may use them after my favorite products run out, but happens every time I get something new so they just keep left and accumulated. Now it’s been stored for a while, so I’m going to discard those I'm not going to use and unload the bathroom shelves a little.

  • Discarding Unopened Body Lotion and Body Cream

Products are really unopened. These are just little size trial samples. I got a trial kit of these products before and actually it was fine. But now I use as body cream fully natural cocoa butter. I like the results and do not want to change it, so will offer these unopened products to one of my colleagues.

Decluttering: Skincare and Beauty Products

  • Discarding Unopened Skincare Trial Kit

These are also sample bottles of the locally famous skincare brand, Essential Softener, Essential Emulsion and Firming Facial Cream. This is firming series addressing anti-aging skin concerns. I prefer to use skincare providing hydration to the skin which this set does not address, so I feel quite easy to discard. Since products are also brand-new and unused, will offer it to the same colleague.

Decluttering: Skincare and Beauty Products

  • Discarding open but unfinished Skincare Products

Unfinished products didn’t meet my skin’s needs so do no see any point in keeping them. All of them are either from free trial kits or gift kits, so that’s ok to discard.

Decluttering: Skincare and Beauty Products

  • Discarding open but unfinished Dry Shampoo.

Dry Shampoo is actually a powder. It tried it several times but it was not inconvenient to use, also it was noticeable on my dark hair so I stopped using it after a few tries. It stuck on my bathroom shelf for around a year with no use, so finally it’s time to clear the space and discard.

Decluttering: Skincare and Beauty Products

  • Discarding Scented Body Mist

It was a gift from one of colleague a few years ago. Body Mist has actually nice fragrance, but a bit too strong as I find. Also, if I want some fragrance, I prefer to use some good perfume than body mist that’s why haven’t finished it after years of keeping. Discarding it just because do not need it.

Decluttering: Skincare and Beauty Products

  • Discarding Unfinished Nail Polish

Originally I bought it to try homemade French manicure. But I have chosen color a bit wrongly. For French manicure it’s quite dark. I thought maybe I can wear this color on itself but I don’t find it looking good on my hands. So after months of keeping just time to discard.

Decluttering: Skincare and Beauty Products

I still have a lot of declutter work for my skincare and will be doing it step by step. For now at least the first step is made, and products which are not being used have cleared the space. I can see the results on bathroom shelf, that's great and very inspiring to keep on!
